On Doing What You Love

I think about the whole “do what you love” thing constantly, so while some folks whose musings I respect are writing about it, I’ll share my thoughts as well…

Of course Tony oversimplified it, but Michele’s cynicism echos how most people feel about this and is exactly why they need an oversimplified kick in the ass sometimes.

Is it too late for some people to do what they love? Maybe. Is it too late for you? You’re reading this on the internet, so probably not.

Part 1 is doing what it takes.

If you have the ability and motivation, the opportunity to DWYL is going to present itself. Maybe it’s not going to be your day job. Maybe it’s not going to pay the bills, but if you really love it, it’s worth keeping that day job as a means to an end. If you do what it takes to DWYL, you’ll never regret it, even if you never get to part 2.

Part 2 is making it.

If you’re good (or become good) at DWYL, you’re going to gain traction. “Making it” depends a lot on what it is you’re doing, so success can mean different things to different folks. It can come instantly or take time. It can take a shit load of work or you could luck into it, but it’s not out of reach if you’re willing to keep doing what it takes.

If you love to write, write. If you love photography, make photos. If you love to do it, stop making excuses and do it. Share your love, share your work, try to make it. Even if it never pays the bills you’re going to be happier for doing it.
